UDS has launched demining operations in the Kharkiv region
Starting in April, UDS began deploying a dedicated unit — the "East" Humanitarian Demining Department, based in Kharkiv region and responsible for operations across Kharkiv, Sumy, and Donetsk regions.
“Last year, UDS was conducting only non-technical surveys (NTS) in eastern Ukraine. Our teams were active in Kramatorsk, Izium, Kamianka, and other communities. As planned, on April 1st, we began demining agricultural lands in the Kharkiv region. The ‘East’ department has officially started its work,” said UDS Technical Director Eduard Drach.
The work is being carried out under a state-funded program commissioned by the Humanitarian Demining Center.
The demining operations are led by Ihor Paraliush.
30 specialists have been engaged in the operation.
⚠️ The contaminated area contains various threats, including:
- Anti-personnel blast mines PFM-1 ("butterfly" mines)
- Anti-tank mines TM-62
- Remnants of the Uragan MLRS launcher
- Indications of cluster submunitions 9N210
The total area of the site is 54 hectares, belonging to the agricultural producer "Barvinok".
The demining operations include the following humanitarian demining processes:
- Mechanical demining using machines and equipment
- Manual demining
- Battle Area Clearance (BAC)
⏳ The demining is expected to be completed by the end of April 2025.
💬 “Kharkiv region is a new priority for UDS. This year, our ‘East’ department aims to clear at least 2,000 hectares of agricultural land in the region,” – added Eduard Drach, UDS Technical Director.
