Curiosity can cost a life: what everyone needs to remember about the danger of landmines and explosive ordnance

Ukraine remains one of the most heavily contaminated countries in the world with explosive ordnance. That is why basic safety rules must become second nature — for both adults and children.

⚠️ If you encounter an unknown or suspicious object:

DO NOT APPROACH IT

DO NOT TOUCH IT

DO NOT MOVE IT

Do not try to determine what it is yourself. Do not touch it with sticks, attempt to dismantle it, throw it into a fire, or under any circumstances take it with you “as a souvenir.” Calmly return along the same route you came from, warn people nearby, and immediately call 101 or 102.

Special attention should be paid to children. Their natural curiosity can have fatal consequences, as anything found by a roadside, in the grass, or inside an abandoned building can be dangerous. For a child, the message should be as simple as possible:

👉 See it — don’t approach it. Don’t touch it. Call an adult.

Mine risk education and risk prevention among civilians are among UDS’s key areas of work. As part of our certified processes and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP 10.01 “Public Information”), we have already conducted more than 100 specialized awareness-raising activities.

Our goal is not simply to provide information, but to develop a lasting and safe behavioral model for everyday life, especially among the most vulnerable groups of the population.

🎥 How can we talk about serious issues in a clear and accessible way?

A great example was created by the legendary Ukrainian band TNMK, the East Europe Foundation, and the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, who produced the animated track “Look Where You’re Going” as part of the “Watch Your Step!” programme (DanChurchAid) and the “Spilnodia” programme (with the support of the EU).

The track was originally designed as a tool for children, but it instantly became a universal reminder for every Ukrainian.

We sincerely thank the guys for drawing attention to this critically important topic! When creativity and popularity help save people’s lives, it is the best possible synergy between culture and safety.

Watch it yourself, share it with your loved ones, and be sure to show it to children.
