Another WWII Shell Discovered by UDS in Kyiv Region

On the grounds of the Institute of Potato Farming of the NAAS of Ukraine, UDS deminers discovered another artillery shell dating back to World War II. Although the 76 mm shell was missing its fuse, it still contained explosive material, posing a serious threat to life.

‼️ This marks the 17th WWII-era shell found by our deminers in the Kyiv region. Most of these have been uncovered on the fields of the Institute of Potato Farming, which are home to highly valuable agricultural land.

The dangerous find was made during humanitarian demining operations, using ORVBD methodology and a large-frame metal detector. The shell was buried at a depth of just 60 cm.

This is yet another reminder that even after nearly 80 years, deadly remnants of war can still lie just beneath the surface.

Once detected, the object is recorded in the IMSMA system, and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit of the UDS Department of Special Operations destroys it on-site — either by burning or using a donor charge detonation method.

It’s important to note that this area was temporarily occupied in 2022, with positions established by both enemy forces and Ukrainian Armed Forces. This overlap of historic and modern explosive threats greatly complicates the clearance process.

‼️ We urge all citizens to remain extremely cautious when encountering suspicious objects in fields, forests, or open ground. Do not touch or attempt to move them — instead, report the discovery immediately by calling 101 or 102.

Timely reporting can save lives.

UDS continues to clear Ukrainian land of the explosive contamination left behind by both past and present wars.
